Street Theater around NYC
SHP
stages street performances regularly around New York City. We go out in
groups and perform skits, radical cheers, and solicit audience
participation. Write to street_theater@streetharassmentproject.org to get information on upcoming performances and how you can join.
Counter Harassment Parties
SHP
organizes Counter Harassment Parties somewhat regularly during the
summer months. Women gather together at a pre-determined location
in the city and then break off into smaller groups and wait for the
'cat-calling' from men on the street to begin. Then, depending on
which group they are working in, women respond to harassment with
"counter-harassment." Help us bust the patriarchy by showing men that
there IS a consequence to disrespecting women, and that women WILL
confront them in solidarity with other women! For an article about
one such Counter Harassment Party read the May 11, 2002, entry on
our Past
Actions page.
For more information and for the dates of the next
CHPs, please call 912-713-5743
Workshops
The workshop group creates and conducts workshops on
street harassment for high school classes and college
and community groups. In our workshops, we seek to
raise awareness among women and men about the sexist
harassment women experience every day, and to work on
what we can do to stop it! Write to workshops@streetharassmentproject.org if you would like to have us come give a workshop for you.
Street Harassment Archives: Story-Collecting
SHP
is always soliciting stories from women who have experienced street
harassment. We believe it is important to document the details of
harassment to better understand it and equip us to fight it. If you
have a story (big deal or small deal) to send us submit it at webmistress@streetharassmentproject.org. We plan to compile these stories regularly into booklets. If you would like us to send you one, send us an email.
Porno Card Distribution
We
regularly distribute "porno cards" around the city - in subways, phone
booths, men's bathrooms - to raise awareness of street harassment.
These cards are designed to look like cards used to advertise sex
workers (e.g., "call cindi for a good time") but when you turn the card
over, there's no number for a good time but statements against
harassment of women by men in public places. If you would like to join
us on one of our distribution runs, or if you want to order a packed
($1 for a pack of 20) send a message to graphics@streetharassmentproject.org or call us at 212-713-5743. You can also download both sides of the cards and print them out yourself (check the Flyers section).
Bike Patrol
This
is something we are planning to begin soon. We will bike around the
city in groups and confront men who harass women on the street. |
