WORKSHOP AT THE LAGUARDIA COLLEGE WOMEN'S CENTER: NOVEMBER 7, 2001
The Workshop Group of The Street Harassment Project had a great time presenting at LaGuardia Community College in Queens on Wednesday, November 7th. About 15 people attended the workshop, among them some fabulous feminists who expressed interest in joining the project! As we discussed street harassment, the universality of women's experiences with this daily reality became clear. We also brainstormed and shared strategies for combating harassment and are looking forward to more street actions, more street theaterm and of course, more workshops!

If you are a member of an organization that would like to host a workshop by the women of the Street Harassment Project, email workshops@streetharassmentproject.org.

COUNTER-HARASSMENT PARTY: SEPTEMBER 8, 2001
The SHP held a counter-harassment party. Those present harassed and humiliated any man on the street who dared to take them on. If you would like to find out about future counter-harassment parties email street_theater@streetharassmentproject.org.

LADYFEST*EAST - SCREENING OF WARZONE: SEPTEMBER 8, 2001
The Street Harassment Project co-hosted a screening of the film Warzone by Maggie Hadleigh-West at the Anthology Film Archives.

RALLY TO MARK THE ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF ASSAULTS ON 56 WOMEN IN CENTRAL PARK: JUNE 9, 2001
There was a great turnout for this event, with speeches by prominent New York activists. Read an article written by one of our members about this event. Also, see original press release.

DEPARTMENT OF SPACE AND LAND RECLAMATION WEEKEND CAMPAIGN APRIL 27-29 IN CHICAGO
Only one member of our group made it out to Chicago for this event and she planned to do a performance piece were she would harass men to give them a taste of their own medicine.

PRO-CHOICE NOW RALLY IN WASHINGTON D.C. ON APRIL 21
Several SHP members joined NOW down in D.C. for a rally to speak out about abortion rights. 8,000-10,000 people participated.

SHP STREET THEATER IN WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK ON APRIL 20
We gave out loads of flyers and had a generally good response despite some male hecklers. A film student from NYU was shooting in the park and got some footage of us to put on NYU's cable access. We are hoping to collaborate with Estrotribe and Artichoke in the future.

SPRING OFFENSIVE ON MARCH 20
Women Smashed Street Harassment! - On the first day of spring, women and men turned out at Bryant Park to protest what we all know comes with warm weather - an increase in street harassment - the harassment of women and girls by men in public spaces...

Women passed out flyers and porno cards to passers by, and engaged in conversation and argument over why harassment of women has got to end, why women should be able to dress comfortably without getting harassed every time she walks outside. A few members of SHP were interviewed by a local TV station and featured on the evening news as women protesting "cat-calling." All we can hope is that viewers recognized this belittling of street harassment as misrepresentation by the media to make a 'good' story.

On the steps near the north east corner of Bryant Park, members of the Street Harassment Project gave speeches and guests, including Michael David, of New York Men Against Sexism came up to voice support. The lunch-time rally ended with a march to remind women to feel empowered in public spaces.

BENEFIT AT DUMBA ON JANUARY 27 2001
Over a hundred women and men turned out to support the Street Harassment Project. Performers included:

The Anomolies, The Crowns on 45, Noel (slam poet), Mahina Movement, Gina Young, Estrotribe, and the Radical Cheerleaders.

We received overwhelming support from various groups who donated items to be raffled for our group (see our links section to learn more about them). We received help from:

One Angry Girl, Mr. Lady Records, Debri Field, BUST Magazine, Ladies Art Revival, Kill Rock Stars, Soft Skull Press, Autonomedia, Bitch Magazine, Beacon's Closet (in Brooklyn), The Brooklyn Women's Martial Arts, Planet One Cafe (Manhattan), Other Music, Two Girls and a Garage, and Sticker Sisters.

We served vegan chili, cornbread, and desserts throughout the evening. And we were especially lucky that the folks at DUMBA were so good and kind and helpful to us!

Overall the evening was a great success and we raised enough money to get real server space for our web site, a p.o. box, and to fund a print run of posters. We also plan to use some of the money toward funding our bike patrol (more details on that in the Ongoing Actions section).

MARCH IN D.C. ON JANUARY 20
Members of the SHP represented our group in D.C. on Inauguration weekend. Beyond the obvious reasons to protest Bush's disturbing rise to power, the SHP objects to Bush's appointment of John Ashcroft to the position of Attorney General. Ashcroft's record is ultra-conservative and anti-choice. The SHP joined thousands of women and men in Washington, D.C. to protest Bush's move into the White House.
