PRESS RELEASE TO ANNOUNCE SHP BENEFIT ON AUGUST 6, 2003

On Wednesday, August 6, 2003 from 5:30-8:00pm The Street Harassment Project will be holding a benefit at Apartment, 419 West 13th Street, between 9th Avenue and Washington. $10 is the suggested donation, and a $15 donation gets you some of our "fake" penis and porno business cards, as well as a raffle ticket.

"Hey baby," "smile for me sexy," "what I could do to you," "psst, hey honey" and "nice tits," are just a few of the menacing comments hurled at women by men everyday on the streets and in other public spaces. The Street Harassment Project is a New York City based feminist activist group of women who fight against this type of omnipresent harassment of women. Some of our goals include: creating an atmosphere in which street harassment is completely socially unacceptable, educating/raising awareness about the issue of street harassment, developing ideas and strategies for handling harassment on the street, and engaging in actions that make harassment of women not pleasant and not rewarding for the harasser.

Since becoming active three years ago, The Street Harassment Project has been publicized in Indymedia, Time Out, and Bust magazines, and in fall of 2002 made the Village Voice "Best of NYC " list. We do action campaigns and workshops. Current SHP projects include: direct actions, such as passing out "look alike" business cards to offenders that say "you have been accused of insulting and harassing a woman on the street, this card has been treated with poisonous ink and within six hours your penis will fall off."

Please join us at APT if you would like to support us and take a stand against street harassment of women by men. The festivities include food, drinks, and the raffling off of tons of good stuff. Also, tearin up the turntables will be DJ Lindsey of negroclash and Julie a.k.a. DJ Shakey.
